Solid State Drives:- An Innovation

The usage and penetration of the computers as well as the World Wide Web or the more commonly used term that is the internet has grown tremendously in the last few years. Along with this growth the amount of information that is transferred and stored in the computer has also grown at an incredible pace. Thus the need in the increase of the storage space in the hard drives or their memory capacities has also increased significantly. But the access speed has not been able to keep pace with the increase in the memory capacity and this has largely to do with the limitation in the technology. The hard drive is mechanical in nature and all the various efforts in order to increase its access speed has met with returns that are modest at best and diminishing most of the time. Thus a new technology called the solid state drive or the SSD is increasingly competing with the conventional hard drives or the HDDs and increasingly garnering greater market share. The fastest SSD are offering access speeds that are way better than those offered by the conventional HDDs. The SSDs are using flash memory instead of being mechanical and it is the same chip technology that we use to store pictures in our digital cameras. And the good news is that the best SSDs are becoming more affordable every day with new technological progress and luring more computer users into their fold.

The fastest SSDs can outperform the conventional HDDs on several fronts simply because they are four times smaller and lighter than the mechanical hard drives and can also perform at speeds up to fifty times faster. The best SSD are also more reliable than their conventional counterparts since they do not contain any moving parts and consequently produce less amount of heat and consume much less power, so in a way they are more sustainable and environment friendly as well. The best SSD that are currently available in the market are also considerable memory capacity with drives of storage space of upwards of one terabytes available. These SSDs are also expected to last longer since the latest technology ensures that all the cells of the SSD receives equal work load. And the flash memory ensures that the memory cells can be rewritten for a large number of times. Thus the best SSDs are expected to last more than ten years for an average user.

The best SSDS have become increasingly affordable with the price falling to about $2 per GB from the heights of more than $25 per GB. This price is expected to fall even further with increasing demands to the level of around $1 per GB as in the case of the conventional mechanical drives. The fastest SSDs are the SATAIII SSDS that are capable of enormous speeds and are expected to be the next generation in the technological innovations. They also promise to be more durable and energy efficient which being one of the most criteria now days while deciphering the viability and efficiency of any new electronics product.
